Writers Guidelines

Black Point Press is always interested in pitches from informed and entertaining writers, particularly industry insiders who have a unique perspective to share with our landlord audience. Expertise in the industry, be it legal, insurance, property management, real estate, etc., is always appreciated. However, oftentimes general interest writers can also create a winning pitch.

No matter who the author, Black Point Press is looking for articles that will be of particular interest to the apartment industry, has a new take on a topic we may have covered in the past (or is on a brand-new subject our readers have never heard about before) and is written in an authoritative and lively manner. Interviews with others in the field are strongly encouraged, as are interviews with apartment owners and managers who may have experience with the article’s subject matter.

Below, please find some more specific guidelines for your submissions.

Copy

  • Article length should be between 1,000 and 2,000 words.
  • Articles must be submitted in Microsoft Word format.
  • Do not Bold or CAPITALIZE words for emphasis.
  • Sparingly use italics for emphasis only.
  • Sparingly use “quote” marks for emphasis only.
  • Place only one space between sentences.
  • Spell out numbers one through nine.
  • Select a gender for a subject (do not use he/she or him/her).
  • Do not indent paragraphs.
  • Do not double-space lines.
  • Avoid using numbered or bulleted lists.
  • Do not include images in MS Word documents.
  • Include a two-sentence biography with your article.

Visual

  • Separately submit raw data for charts.
  • Acceptable formats are PDF, JPG or TIF formats; minimum 300 dpi.

Identity

  • Avoid mention of your company name in the article.
  • Do not use “we” when there is only one author.

Financial

  • Use a % symbol instead of the word percent
  • Use a $ symbol instead of the word dollar.
  • Use the word million instead of six zeros.
